Loudoun Believers Establishing a 24/7 Prayer Chain

“I have set watchmen on your walls, O Jerusalem;
They shall never hold their peace day or night.
You who make mention of the Lord, do not keep silent,
And give Him no rest till He establishes
And till He makes Jerusalem a praise in the earth.”

Isaiah 62: 6 & 7

Beginning in 2007, members of congregations working with Loudoun’s Community Prayer Watch will begin to establish around the clock prayer for Loudoun County. Individuals will sign up for weekly one hour time periods to cover key areas in prayer. Some of these key areas will be Loudoun government, our schools, families, businesses, churches, as well as special prayer concerns.

Presently there are some 40 churches involved in prayer and fasting for Loudoun. These local congregations participate by taking a certain day of the week to pray and fast. Each congregation has the flexibility to choose how they take part. For some it is a monthly prayer meeting, for other congregations, members pray and fast on their own. This new initiative of 24/7 prayer will “fill in the gap” for round the clock prayer. Participants in this prayer chain will be asked to pray for 1 hour each week. “We work with many strong prayer leaders in Loudoun County. Once they share the vision with their prayer teams, we believe that many of the 168 prayer slots will fill quickly.”

This type of continual prayer is not unknown among Christians. Beginning with the early church there are examples of all night prayer. Anna “did not depart from the temple, but served God with fastings and prayers night and day.” (Luke 2:37) Late night prayer, modeled by Jesus, is also mentioned in the Book of Acts The Moravians, who established a 24/7 prayer meeting which lasted 100 years, saw tremendous results from their efforts. The present day International House of Prayer in Kansas City has day and night prayer, intercession, and worship, and has impacted the nations.

There are numerous accounts of the effect of prayer on a city or a region. One of which happened in our nation’s capital in July, 2006. In response to the 14 murders from July 1st to the 13th, which city officials declared a “Crime Emergency”, the Christian Defense Coalition (CDC) sponsored a six-day prayer vigil with round the clock prayer , held on the National Mall. Throughout the six-day prayer vigil no murders were committed in Washington. Richmond has also seen the immediate, powerful effect of prayer. Under similar circumstances in 1986, pastors from Richmond invited IFA’s Gary Bergel to lead a prayer conference and the 700 intercessors in attendance concentrated on the murder rate (for which Richmond was then known.) Five weeks later an article in Richmond Times-Dispatch announced that police were baffled at an extraordinary month long drop in murders beginning Feb 9th, the first day of the prayer conference!
